‘Calibration' is the comparison of an instrument's performance with a standard of known accuracy. However, all laboratory and even national standards have uncertainties in their measurements, making it impossible to be 100% confident that an instrument is operating within its stated tolerance limits.
A regular program of calibration, conducted by an accredited laboratory, can provide very low measurement uncertainties at specific measurement points. This allows both test instrument users and their customers to have confidence in the test results.
Traditionally, AC power meters have been calibrated at frequencies of 50/60 Hz. However, Yokogawa and other power meter manufacturers offer instruments with much higher power measuring bandwidths. This is because most applications consume power at higher frequencies of up to 100kHz.
These applications include:
• Switch-mode power supplies
• High-frequency electronic lighting ballasts
• Soft starters in motor control systems
• Frequency converters in traction applications
Calibration of high-frequency power has lagged the development of power meters to address these applications, and few national laboratories can provide traceability up to 100 kHz. Without this capability, there remains doubt over the validity of the specifications of a power meter or analyzer.
The guaranteed accuracy and precision of Yokogawa's instruments results from the fact that Yokogawa has its own European Standards Laboratory at its European headquarters in The Netherlands.
This facility was the first industrial (i.e. non-government or national) organization in the world to offer accredited power calibration, at frequencies up to 100 kHz. ISO/IEC17025 accreditation (RvA K164) demonstrates the international competence of the laboratory.

No measurement is ever correct. There is always an unknown, finite, non-zero difference between a measured value and the corresponding ‘true' value. In other words, a user can never be 100% sure that an instrument is operating within its specified tolerance limits.
However, there are steps that can be taken to minimize the possibility of a measurement falling outside specified tolerance or uncertainty bands.
Regular traceable calibration is a method for gaining quantifiable confidence in a measurement system by comparing the instrument's performance to a standard of known accuracy.
It is important to understand the difference between ‘calibration' and ‘adjustment'. Calibration is the comparison of a measuring instrument (an unknown) against an equal or better standard. A standard in a measurement is therefore the reference.
Instruments are adjusted initially at the factory to indicate a value that is as close as possible to the reference value. The uncertainties of the reference standard used in the adjustment process will also dictate the confidence that the indicated value is ‘correct'.
As the instrument ages, the indicated value may drift due to environmental factors (temperature, humidity, oxidation, loading etc.) which will also be dependent on the quality of its design and manufacture. To ensure that the instrument continues to operate within the manufacturer's tolerances, the instrument should be compared to the reference value on a regular basis (usually annually). If necessary, the instrument can then be re-adjusted.

Meeting the latest standard
Yokogawa’s European Calibration Laboratory has achieved accreditation to the latest revision of ISO 17025:2017 (RvA K164) standard, for power measurements at up to 100 kHz.
The standard ISO/IEC 17025:2017, General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories, enables both Yokogawa’s European Standards Laboratory and its customers to demonstrate that they operate competently and generate valid measurement results.
As a result, test reports and certificates can be accepted from one country to another without the need for further testing.
By achieving accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025:2017, Yokogawa has shown it is ready to take on new concepts and maintain its facilities in the front rank of calibration service providers, for the benefit of all our customers.
New energy calibration service
Customers can now check the accuracy of their AC energy measuring devices following the launch of Yokogawa’s new AC energy calibration service.
The launch of the new service follows Yokogawa’s accreditation (RvA K164) to ISO17025, allowing the calibration of AC energy measuring devices at up to 40 MWh at a maximum time of 1000 hours.
This is ideal for manufacturers of products, equipment, or appliances where the measurement of energy efficiency is critical to meet efficiency goals, for proving product specifications or meeting regulatory requirements such as energy labelling of consumer products.
Energy meter calibration is also vital for applications such as billing of electrical energy between supplier and user. This is needed not only for houses and offices but also when charging electrical vehicles. Other uses include renewable energy projects, such as photovoltaic and wind installations and end tests and type rating where energy is involved.
The service makes it easier to source ISO17025 accredited energy measurements for
400 Hz systems, making it attractive for engineers working on Automotive, Aviation and Marine applications.
Other leading capabilities include:
• Calibration of external current transducers at currents of up to 1200 A with very precise phase calibration to cater for the measurement of power as well as current.
• Calibration at low power factors down to 0.001.
• High accuracy power calibration for frequencies between 45 and 60 Hz using a sampling wattmeter with uncertainties less than 30 parts in 106 for active power.
• Calibration of instruments such as: digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, ScopeCorders, data loggers, recorders, calibrators, frequency counters, communication testers, optical spectrum analyzers (OSA).

Bilateral Comparison LF Power up to 100 kHz
Nowadays there is more need for traceability for distorted power waveforms. Therefore a power calibration system was developed at the European Standards Laboratory of Yokogawa Europe Solutions B.V. This system has the capability to calibrate electrical power
meters from DC, 10 Hz up to 100 kHz. To evaluate the calibration system traceability, a bilateral comparison was carried out between the Yokogawa European Standards Laboratory and the National Standards Institute of Sweden (RISE).

Interlaboratory Comparison LF-Power
Yokogawa participated in an official Interlaboratory Comparison on low frequency (LF) power.
Different accredited laboratories measured an object (a power meter) and the results were compared to reference values. The different laboratories are not shown by name, however the Yokogawa European Standards Laboratory is described as ‘L002'.

Yokogawa Europe Sampling Wattmeter for Low Frequencies
A high accuracy power measurement system, based on digital sampling techniques, is being developed at the standards laboratory of Yokogawa in Europe. The system is based on two sampling voltmeters and a synchronization device. Using potential transformers and compensated current transformers with an AC shunt resistor, the uncertainty is less than 20 ppm for active, reactive and apparent power for frequencies between 45 Hz - 60 Hz.
Report comparison on power 53 Hz 2020
Upon the request from other calibration laboratories within the Netherlands, Yokogawa Europe Solutions B.V. was asked to organize a comparison to Low Frequency Power. The Yokogawa European standards Laboratory has the expertise and reference instruments to do this.
The conclusion of the comparison was that all laboratory measurement agrees with the reference values for the expanded measurement uncertainty and that the Yokogawa WT5000 Precison power analyzer can be used as a traveling standard due to good stability.
