This four hour workshop will provide the attendees with a three step process for making precision electrical and mechanical power measurements on various Motors and Variable Speed Drive Systems. We will show how to make precision measurements and calculate the Energy Efficiency for motor and drive systems in industrial and automotive operations, and renewable energy applications such as wind turbines and solar equipment. A special section will be devoted to the Current Sensors required for use on Variable Frequency Drives and Inverter systems.
Attendees should leave with a working knowledge and understanding of how to make precision power measurements on complex distorted waveforms such as from a Variable Frequency Drive system. They will also learn about the instruments to use and how to make high accuracy measurements required for energy efficiency calculations on various types of power inverters.

Presenter's Profile

Bill Gatheridge

The training will be hosted by Bill Gatheridge of Yokogawa Corporation of America. Bill is the Product Manager at Yokogawa, and is responsible for the Power Analyzer product line as well as other measuring instruments. He has over 20 years experience with Yokogawa in the area of precision electrical power measurements. Bill has been running both live and WebEx seminars on various power measurement topics and applications for the past 10 years. He is a member and Vice Chairman of the ASME PTC19.6 committee on Electrical Power Measurements for Utility Power Plant Performance Testing. He is also a member of the RTCA/DO-160 committee for Aircraft Power Testing, and has worked with an ASHRAE committee on variable speed drive testing. Bill has a degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University.

Ian Walker

Ian Walker is the Vice President of Sales for GMW Associates. GMW and Yokogawa teamed together to develop a precision Current Transformer system to solve the need for high accuracy and wide band frequency current measurements required for present day efficiency calculations. Ian has an MSc Degree in Nuclear Physics from the University of Auckland, New Zealand. He is the co founder of GMW Associates in California and has been managing the development of very high precision magnetic field and current measurement and control instrumentation for electromagnets used in particle accelerators, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic storage test systems. In recent years Ian has been transferring the technology used in very high accuracy non-contact magnetic current sensors to electrical power measurements to meet the demand for higher accuracy at higher currents over bandwidths extending from DC to over 100 kHz.
