University of Illinois Selects Yokogawa Measuring Technology for New Electrical and Computer Engineering Building Laboratories

The University of Illinois Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department has selected Yokogawa’s WT310 Power Meter as a key test tool for its Undergraduate and Graduate testing laboratories in the new Electrical and Computer Engineering Building under development. The WT310 offers updated and innovative measurement functions, which will benefit young engineers with basic electrical power measurements.

The state of the art 230,000 square foot ECE building is being constructed in the heart of the university’s center for groundbreaking, high-tech research. The new building is striving for a net-zero energy design that will enable the building to supply all of its own energy. From a vast array of photovoltaic cells, to a chilled beam system to cool and heat the classroom tower, the University of Illinois ECE building will accomplish a major campus addition with maximum space and minimal carbon footprint. With these developments, the ECE department will improve and enhance on the lab courses. Student labs will be showcased in the new building, providing visitors opportunities to watch as the future leaders of the field learn the fundamental skills that will ensure their success. 
In the development process, Yokogawa built on its years of experience with power measurement technology and major global customers involved in inverter, power supply and motor design to create the WT310 Power Meter.
Many of today’s power conversion circuits use energy saving switching techniques, which can cause highly distorted voltage or current waveforms with high harmonic content. To measure these waveforms accurately, the WT300 uses high resolution sixteen bit Analog to Digital converters with a digitizing rate of 100 kS/s, and a bandwidth from DC and 0.5 Hz to 100 kHz. Basic power measurement accuracy is 0.1% of Reading plus 0.1% of Range.
